Phonetics is the study or representation of
vocal sounds. The varying sounds that humans
make are transcribed on paper as letters of
the International Phonetic Alphabet. For
example the word "cistern" is phonetically
transcribed as /sistn/. The "er" part of
"cistern" is not transcribed because it
is not pronounced by humans in speech. The
slashes (/) are the accepted method of
showing a transcription. Phonetics is used
for television in writing subtitles because
of its quickness. The transcriptions are put
to wider use in PHONOLOGY.
